PHD POSITION IN SOCIOLOGY AND HISTORY OF PSYCHOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE
We are currently looking for a PhD student working on the sociology and history of moral psychology/neuroscience at the Volkswagen Foundation (Hanover, Germany) in Empirical Research and Normative Implications' for a period of three years (Groningen: four years). Within this project, international experts in philosophy and psychology collaborate to address central questions about moral psychology. The group based at the Department of Theory and History of Psychology (Faculty of Behavioral and Social Sciences, University of Groningen) is now seeking a PhD student to investigate some of them: (1) Why and how did the transition to understanding moral judgment as based in emotion and intuition occur? This investigation will provide an important contribution to the history of psychology concerning a topic on which remarkably little has been published hitherto. (2) How are interpretations of moral judgment in terms of emotion and intuition currently being applied in normative contexts? This topic is particularly relevant since contemporary findings of moral psychology are influencing normative discourse in law, moral philosophy and politics. Respective examples include debates about when a person should be held legally responsible, what constitutes a sound moral judgment and how political persuasion should be carried out.
The Volkswagen Foundation (Hanover, Germany) and the three collaborating universities of Cologne, Groningen and Oxford have established the research project 'Intuition and Emotion in Moral Decision Making.

PHD STUDENTSHIP, UK
Department of Geography Open University Securing life has become a key problematic in contemporary societies. Increasingly involving the differential valuing, promoting, and regulating of various forms of life and living as much as the attempt to make matters safe through the halting of movement, how to manage the vitality and circulation of human and nonhuman bodies is now a constant challenge in all kinds of spaces. Following the award of an ESRC grant entitled Biosecurity Borderlands, a linked but independent university-funded PhD studentship with no nationality or residence restrictions is available to investigate such concerns for three years starting in October 2009 (or as soon as possible after). Based in the Open University's Department of Geography, the successful candidate will be encouraged to: * develop a project that investigates current concerns in one or more of the following broad areas: the production, regulation or excess of human and/or nonhuman 'life' and lives; the practice(s) of security; the politics of living with other bodies (human or nonhuman); the sites of life's negotiation (e.g. sciences, agriculture, medicine, food); * explore how current theoretical understandings such as (bio)security, (bio)geographies, (bio)politics, or (bio)power or similar speak to or are challenged by these practices and their contemporary transformations; * have a sense of how their study might - in a broad sense - complement and extend the work of the team investigating biosecurity in the UK at Exeter and the Open Universities. Applications due: 17 July 2009 Contact: SocSci-Geog-PG-Admissions@open.ac.uk; Alternatively contact Dr Nick Bingham (n.bingham@open.ac.uk) for informal discussion about the position.

PhD AND POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Department of Anthropology University of Copenhagen The multi-disciplinary Copenhagen Centre for Healthy Ageing is dedicated to research on better health throughout life, which in turn may contribute to diminished frailty in life's later years. With a generous grant from the Nordea Foundation, the Centre supports research from the molecular to the social level, organized under five research themes. Theme 4 is concerned with social and cultural aspects of interventions, with a primary focus on preventive medication. With more and more drugs coming onto the market, prescription and over-the-counter medicines are a massively important technology for preventing, postponing and curing chronic diseases. As longevity increases, the issue of long-term medication becomes an ever more urgent problem for policy makers, health care providers, and citizens. Costs and the dangers of adverse reactions must be weighed against convenience and effectiveness. Social differences in access and utilization must be considered. The benefits of preventive treatment are often not clear and should be seen in the context of sustainability, time perspectives of effects, possible alternatives such as more physical activity and dietary changes, and people's own understanding and care of their health. We intend to explore this theme through three inter-connected research questions concerning: decision making about preventive drug interventions and their effects; the influence of social and ethnic factors on the use of preventive drug interventions; tools for coordination and integration of preventive drug interventions (see http://sundaldring.ku.dk) for a fuller description of the research center). While inter-disciplinary synergies will be encouraged, researchers will be affiliated to existing university departments. Applications are hereby invited for two Post Doc positions and one Ph.D. preparation grant. The Post Docs will be placed at the Department of Anthropology in the Social Science Faculty and the Unit of Health Services Research, Department of Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences. The pre-PhD will be affiliated to one of the two units or to the Unit of Social Medicine under the Department of Public Health. Applications due: 15 May 2009

PhD STUDENTSHIP, UNITED KINGDOM
Centre for the Study of Incentives in Health Queen Mary University, London We would like to invite applications for a 4 year PhD Studentship at the Wellcome Trust funded Centre for the Study of Incentives in Health. The Centre has been set up to address the central question "When is it right to use financial incentives to improve health?" Governments increasingly use financial and "payment in kind" incentives to encourage people to act in individually and socially beneficial ways, particularly in the context of health policy. Yet even when effective in changing behaviour, their use has attracted strong criticism for being coercive, and undermining of autonomy, personal responsibility and equity. Are you a philosophy graduate with experience of academic research? Do you have an interest in the social sciences? Do you wish to undertake a PhD in an interdisciplinary context? If so, this is an opportunity to be part of an important and integrated research programme that will examine criticisms regarding the use of incentives from the perspectives of three disciplines - philosophy, psychology and economics - with the aim of evaluating whether financial incentives are an acceptable means by which to improve population health. The post is offered full-time for 48 months. Applications are invited from graduates in philosophy particularly those with an interest in practical reason, philosophy of psychology or economics, and moral theory. The successful candidate will have a Master's with a significant component in Philosophy and a first degree in philosophy or a related field. Good organisational and teamworking skills are essential. You will be supervised by the Centre's Principal Investigator, Professor Richard Ashcroft, and will work with an inter-disciplinary research team based at the 3 collaborating colleges within the University of London (KCL, LSE and Queen Mary).
